Join the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights for a discussion about the outbreak of poliovirus in the Gaza Strip for the first time in 25 years. Panelists will discuss the causes of the outbreak, the health cluster vaccination program and the challenges associated with it as well as the future implications of this outbreak on Gaza’s healthcare system.

Mary T. Bassett, MD, MPH, is director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center for Health and Human Rights and FXB Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights in the department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. With more than 30 years of experience devoted to promoting health equity and social justice, both in the United States and abroad, Dr. Bassett’s career has spanned academia, government, and not-for-profit work.

Amir Mohareb

Amir Mohareb, MD

Dr. Amir Mohareb is an Infectious Diseases physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. He directs the Research Program on Humanitarian Action, Global Migration, and Infectious Diseases at the Mass General Center for Global Health. His research is focused on HIV, viral hepatitis, and tropical diseases, particularly among people experiencing forced displacement.

Guy Shalev

Guy Shalev, PhD

Guy Shalev is the Executive Director of Physicians for Human Rights Israel and a research fellow at the Minerva Center for the Rule of Law Under Extreme Conditions. He is a medical and political anthropologist specializing in the intersection of medical professionalism, ethnonational politics, and bioethics in Israel/Palestine. Guy received his Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill in 2018.
